Clinical Facilities
Students received a majority of their clinical experiences at St. John's Hospital. Licensed for 431 beds, St. John’s is a regional medical center serving the central and southern Illinois area. St. John’s is the flagship hospital of Hospital Sisters Health System, a health care ministry with 13 hospitals and multi-specialty medical groups in Illinois and Wisconsin. St. John’s has more than 3,000 staff members and is one of the largest employers in the Springfield area. The medical staff numbers nearly 700 doctors, podiatrists and dentists. More than 15,000 surgical procedures are performed at St. John’s each year. The Prairie Heart Institute at St. John’s Hospital is a national leader in cardiovascular care and the largest heart program in Illinois. They perform more cardiovascular procedures than any other hospital in the state ... including the Chicago area. St. John’s Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Children’s Hospital Association and is the region’s only Pediatric Critical Care Center. The Children’s Hospital is home to the area’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and has dedicated air and ground transportation support. Other special care areas include the Cancer Institute, Regional Wound Care Center, AthletiCare™ Sports Medicine, Sleep Center and the Center for Living.
Every other year St. John’s Hospital serves as a Level 1 trauma center for Central and Southern Illinois. Other facilities used in meeting the educational needs our students include Memorial Medical Center, a 507-bed acute care hospital, McFarland Mental Health Center, Springfield Department of Public Health, and the Visiting Nurses Association of Central Illinois. SIU School of Medicine is also located in Springfield. Springfield and the surrounding counties are fortunate in the variety and scope of the health care facilities available in the immediate area.
